Up against it this time round with plenty of other gigs vying for attention in the area (not to mention the Champions League final that I recorded and watched when I got in), but never fear, the BOBI regulars were out in force and had a whale of a time!
Opening up the evening were the rather marvellous INTERPLANETARY TRASH TALK from over in Nottingham and the night was off to a great start. Wazzing through a jacked up set of rollicking skate Punk-ish tunes, one of the highlights was the bass player wandering off to the bar for a pint mid song. What larks! With songs about Ducktales and a fear of geese, they weren’t intent on covering your usual Punk topics which is refreshing. Blending an, erm, blend of dual vocals from the guitarist and singer that is very reminiscent of Finnish Peace Punks 1981, with a fine line in UK melodipunk mayhem – think In Evil Hour or Headstone Horrors – not to mention a hefty helping of Bad Religion, this lot were a proper Punk Rock treat to those that arrived on time to check out the first band.
Second up were an Indie band from down the road in Spalding. WHO SHOT FRANK? A three piece who were very much in the same arena of bands that get labelled “anthemic” Indie, and “arena” is the right word. Inhaler and Catfish and the Bottlemen were the two bands that struck me as major influences, although WHO SHOT FRANK? had bags of their own personality and feisty energy to carry off their set.
Next up then and yet another change of pace … With a name like THOUGHT HOOLIGANS, you may well be expecting something rather punked up and boisterous, but no, the Lincoln unit served up a wonderful set of highly contagious pop rock tuneage with a hefty nod to folk rock thrown in there to boot. Not to mention some heavy tambourine action. Like if Ferocious Dog lost interest in The Clash and started listening to The Waterboys or even a bit of late 80s Student Union smashers like The Darling Buds or Primitives. Absolutely smashing set and a proper surprise package for me like. Loved ‘em.
Topping the bill then were NOW DISCONNECT as BOBI 14 unleashed yet another genre on the public! The Lincoln Metallers were a monstrously heavy way to end proceedings. Battering us all in to submission, many were willing victims! Mixing the classic sound of big, thunderous, Metal riffs and pounding drums with vocals that veered between emotive singing and incendiary growling plus whatever other noises the enraged frontman could conjure up, it's fair to say they covered a variety of metal and alternative rock bases ... Soundgraden were the one I kept thinking of and that’s high praise indeed as Chris Cornell and co are a big favourite over here in Gadgie Towers. What a night then! Four bands of completely different styles and sounds coming together to play their own original material in Boston. What more could you ask for?
