Another month another BOBI gig! A great night of varied and original music at the Queen of Spades in Boston.
Opening up was a wonderfully strange proposition indeed. DOG EXPLOSION can be best described as Operatic Electro Goth. Or something ... a one man act who spoke of himself in the plural and his canine companion. Reminiscent of our friend Slava B and his creepy vocal histrionics, it was a very intriguing and unusual start to the gig that had everyone mesmerized. Deep baritone vocals over dark synth electronic mayhem! Crumbs.
Next up, and in complete contrast a three piece with a father and son in their ranks. THE TAIL LIGHTS had some likening them to Buffalo Tom and other such dusty, desert high ways but with a much more British feel ... Briticanna? Whatever, their warm and heartfelt indie rock tunes went down well with the now growing crowd.
Third on the bill and the rumpus levels were raised somewhat as a grunge Punk trio in the shape of the fabulous FYZZ WALLIS BAND got going. Spiky tunes - though not a spiky as Fyzz's shoes - with a riotous feminist twist, Fyzz ratted through a great set of tune heavy Punk. Class.
Topping the bill then, were a bunch of talented young scamps, numbering Joaquin in their ranks who was in Newsom, one of the bands that was there right at the start of BOBI. An expansive and slick take on alternative 80s, ONLY SOME DAYS played a fine set of Indie rock that had us all thinking of Echo and the Bunnymen, early Cure, Joy Division and other bleak but beautiful atmosphere fests from the early 1980s.
Yet another successful night that showcased four acts who are completely different to each other but share a love of independent, original music at a grass roots level. Great stuff. See you at the next BOBI gig?
