A year ago we all set out on this adventure wondering if there were more like minded folk in the area who wanted to see live and original bands playing in Boston, and a year later it seems we certainly have discovered such kindred spirits! If the numbers at last nights barnstorming gig are anything to go by, I’d say BOBI is in rude health. Our twelfth gig got underway with a stripped-down acoustic performance from CUBANS AND COGNAC who, due to sad circumstances, are now playing as a two piece. Introducing one song as a tribute to their bass player who passed away recently, their set was high on heartfelt renditions of their usually plugged in Classic Rock tunes. An acoustic guitar and vocalist who could be described as soaring at some points, it was a thoughtful and emotive opening act that had the growing crowd spellbound. They were even asked for an encore!
Second on the bill, and time to ramp things up a bit! We had another two piece and they were a far more raucous affair. DOGS! TEETH! Have been described as a coming together of The Prodigy and Nirvana and yeah, you could see the jumping about and carrying on that would be inspired by The Prodigy and a rambunctious alternative Rock attack, not unlike our mates, those grunge-y good folk Soaper. Their blazing set had plenty of intensity and for a duo, DOGS! TEETH! certainly made a right ruddy racket.
Talking of right ruddy rackets, FOR I THE BADGER continued the noise with a bruising set of muscular modern day Post Punk. Aggressive and full of aggro, the Badgers blasted out a set that would have fans of Idles remembering when Idles sounded really good. Cracking stuff.
Topping the bill, the legendary Fenpunk figure of Sam Jarvis and COUP DE TETE made their long awaited, not to mention delayed, BOBI debut and were formidable headliners. Mixing a melodic style of Grunge with a grubby Pop sensibility, not to mention a healthy dose punk attitude, COUP DE TETE played a great set of songs that were searingly emotive while hitting all the right Alternative Rock notes. Expanding the line up to a four piece has fleshed out the sound with a second guitar – a big one this time, not one of them little ones that Sam manhandles - and added an even more atmospheric dimension to the tunes which bring together a strong sense of belonging and a big skies of Lincolnshire ambience. Great stuff and the best turn out we’ve had yet! One year of BOBI. Twelve gigs done. Crumbs! It appears we were right all along … Boston Original Bands Initiative Year 2 starts now!
