Wow! What a wazzle night at the Queen of Spades, Boston for BOBI #5! Four great bands enjoyed by an appreciative crowd who stuck around to support them from start to finish, plus some smashing new wave/Punk and all sorts else 7”s spun by Endeavour FMs Offbeat Hour chaps.
Opening the evening were Lincoln Alt-Rock outfit FUTURE THEORY who touch on a number of different sounds but “epic Indie” would be my choice of descriptor. A very assured set, despite not having played in a while, FUTURE THEORY mixed sparkling guitars and adventurous rhythms with psyche-esque wig outs conjuring up images of the big, big skies of our bleak Fenland home. Really impressive stuff that had the congregated suggesting Radiohead, mid 80s U2, Mad Season, Audioslave or even a bit of Pink Floyd. Great start to the evening!
Things took a turn for the brutal next with BLUNT SCALPEL and lawks-a-lordy, they terrified and thrilled in equal measure. Heavy, chugging metallic Hardcore that wasn’t afraid to disappear in to Death Metal, full of growls and screaming, it was certainly a dense cacophony and inspired at least one attendee to bust out some wild dance floor action. Some loved it, some were scared, but when the next act stepped up, nobody quite knew what to make of it all!
SLAVA B from Wisbech is a unique talent it’s fair to say. Taking to the stage armed with a microphone, a set of backing tracks, a pile of confetti canons and erm, a bizarre doll that looked like it came straight from the set of The Conjuring films and brought with it some ancient curse that would haunt the new owner, SLAVA B regaled us all with a set of songs that defy description or indeed genre pigeon holing. You could try … Industrial? Metal? Folk? Punk? Dance? Whatever, it was a gloriously idiosyncratic set of shenanigans and everyone present was somewhat transfixed. Brilliant set and I do believe we will be seeing him again in Boston soon at a P4TH gig. Hurrah for that!
Topping the bill were Sleaford’s SOAPER. A two piece brimming with energy and character, they ploughed through a Grunge Punk set list that had the dance floor wake up and it all went off in fine style. Boston style you could say. Sports Day in the Pit! Human Pyramids! Gymnastics! Whatever it was Jake Berry was doing! SOAPER were awesome. Their sound is highly evocative of the early 90s Grunge scene, especially Nirvana, but with a skittish Punk energy that had everyone grinning as probably the most successful BOBI gig to date finally came to an end. Crikey! What a night! What a ruddy night!
